State lawmakers want to require North Carolina's public universities to play against each other in sports more often.

Local election boards across North Carolina are meeting Friday to finalize the results of last week's municipal elections. But several close races could be headed to a recount.

The development came a week after the school district allowed most of its more than 7,000 quarantined students to go back into the classroom before their 14-day isolation period had expired as long as they weren't symptomatic or infected.

Students and staff who don't have a positive COVID-19 test or symptoms should "return to work or school immediately," the district said.
